Chapter Fourteen

Skylar

It’s nearly eight in the evening, and I still haven’t heard from Matteo other than a terse text message telling me he wasn’t sure when he would be free. So now I’m sitting in my new penthouse at The Oasis, waiting for contact.

Jim left town without me but with a hefty new contract for his fighter, so he wasn’t so angry with me for breaking up with him. I suspect Hunter had something to do with that, and I’m not sure how I feel about him solving my problems for me again.

There’s a knock on my door and I jerk it open, hoping to find Matteo. Instead, Trinity Novak is standing there. She’s so much more polished than the last time I saw her two years ago. Being married to a billionaire will do that to a person.

“Mrs. Novak? This is a surprise.”

I open the door wider and motion her in.

“Are you here for my husband?”

I blink in surprise. After the way she spoke to me in the nightclub, the other night and threatened to fire Matteo, I’m surprised by the insecurity I hear in her voice. I’ve never had a reason to dislike Trinity, but she’s had plenty to dislike and distrust me. I want to put her at ease.

“Hell no. I swear. Hunter is a good guy, but if I can be frank, I would rather never see him again. If it helps, I’ve met someone. Someone I knew before I met Hunter. And I like him. A lot. It might go nowhere because he’s got secrets and I’m so god damn tired of men with secrets, but no, Trinity. I have no interest in Hunter. I’m sorry if you have any doubts about that.”

Her shoulders relax, and she exhales. “I think I knew the answer before I got here. And no offense, but he has no interest in you. I just needed to hear it from you. Friendship isn’t something I can promise, but I want your show to be a success, so I’m at your disposal for anything I can do.”

“Do you want something to drink?” I’m not sure why I’m offering. I don’t want her here. But she could be a powerful ally if Hunter is an ass.

She shakes her head. “No, I’m sorry to bother you. I’m not even sure why I came. I think I needed to ease my mind before we go into contract negotiations tomorrow. You did good insisting on your own attorney. My husband is the love of my life, but he holds a grudge like no other man I’ve ever met.”

I snort a laugh when she says that, and it prompts a smile from her. And in that moment, I know I’ve made one more positive step toward being free. It feels fucking good.

“On that, we both agree, Mrs. Novak.”

She shakes her head. “You can call me Trinity. I’m very invested in the grand reopening going well. I think we’re going to be working together a lot the next few months.
